Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Mainframe Solution Architect / Mainframe Migration Architect to support two mainframe migration projects for If Insurance and SpareBank.

The customer already has an architect assigned to the engagement; however, the current capacity is limited. Therefore, they are looking for an additional senior/expert profile who can take greater ownership, drive the architecture work forward, and provide more extensive support across both projects.

The projects involve migrating mainframe applications, code, data, integrations, and related infrastructure from the current platform to a mainframe environment.

The architect will be responsible for understanding the existing mainframe environment, designing the future-state architecture, and defining the overall migration strategy. The role requires broad mainframe knowledge, strong architectural capability, customer-facing experience, and the ability to guide multiple technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Mainframe Architect will be responsible for:

Analyzing and assessing the existing mainframe environment
Creating a comprehensive overview of current applications, data, integrations, and infrastructure
Designing the future-state mainframe architecture
Defining the migration strategy, methodology, and roadmap
Identifying required changes to applications, data, integrations, and infrastructure
Recommending suitable modernization and transition options
Producing the overall solution architecture based on business and technical requirements
Defining target architecture, data flows, integration patterns, and technology choices
Developing high-level designs and documenting architectural decisions
Guiding development and technical teams during implementation
Reviewing detailed designs to ensure alignment with the overall architecture
Ensuring the solution meets requirements for performance, scalability, security, and operations
Providing ongoing technical guidance and architectural support throughout the project lifecycle
Supporting customer-facing discussions and presenting architectural decisions clearly
Taking ownership of architecture activities and driving progress independently

Technical Profile

The candidate does not need to be a deep hands-on specialist in every mainframe technology. However, they must have solid and broad knowledge of mainframe environments and be able to work architecturally across applications, data, integrations, and infrastructure.

Relevant mainframe technologies may include:

COBOL
CICS
Db2
IMS
JCL
MQ
z/OS

The primary focus is to identify an experienced Mainframe Solution Architect or Mainframe Migration Architect, rather than a narrow specialist in one specific technology area.

Experience to Prioritize

The ideal candidate should have experience in:

Mainframe migrations between different environments or service providers
Target architecture design
Migration of applications, data, and infrastructure
Large and complex mainframe environments
Integrations between mainframes and distributed systems
Legacy platform modernization and transition initiatives
Architecture work across multiple technical teams
Customer-facing discussions and presentation of architectural decisions
Taking ownership and driving architecture activities independently

Experience in banking, financial services, or insurance is a strong advantage, but not an absolute requirement.
